Oyster Bag Size & Capacity: What to Specify

A useful size specification distinguishes finished dimensions from raw mesh dimensions and treats capacity as a farm-specific operating choice.

Describe finished dimensions clearly

State finished length and lay-flat width, and explain whether dimensions are measured before or after seams and closures. Do not mix the lay-flat width with circumference; add a sketch if the measurement could be read either way.

Separate size from capacity

Capacity depends on oyster size, stocking density, the farm’s handling practice and the intended growth interval. A bag’s external dimensions do not establish a safe or effective loading quantity.

Include access and attachment details

Record both end treatments, the loading opening, float or line interfaces and any space needed for lifting or turning. These affect usable space and day-to-day handling.

Use a sample or drawing to confirm

Ask the supplier to confirm finished dimensions, tolerances and any stated capacity basis in writing. Approve a representative sample in the intended farming system before treating a volume or loading figure as final.
